Animation Class
Fall, 2024
This is a summary of the smaller animations I made during my time at Pierce. These consist of a lot of test animations and rigs.
Here is a ball animated to bounce around the screen. It was an early test to see how the amount of frames used can effect the speed of an object. It isn't a very logical animation, but made for a decent test for speeds.
Further building on the idea of a bouncing ball, here I began to experiment qith squash and stretch along with acceleration and deacceleration in order to make the bounce of the ball more realistic. We were only required to try and animate the bouncing ball with slowing and speeding, but I had some extra time, so I decided to also try and give it a shadow as well as a face that reacts to the bouncing.
Here I created a rough jumping animation. The idea was to start with the face being a circle and following the flow of the ball animation to create a jump, then expand on that ball to give it a body and limbs. We also needed to try and make it jump over something. I decided to make my circle man hopping over a small gorge. Since I had some extra time again, I opted to shade the animation as well as make it grow larger to create the illusion of the person jumping closer.
Here I needed to animate a parallax animation with at least three different layers. Mine has four different layers. I wanted to do something fun, so I included four of my little Apocolotl characters to the parallax. They're like a type of mutated axolotl, each based on a different type of playing card. Blue being diamond, yellow being spade, red for heart, and green for club. For this project, I had struggled a bit against Adobe Animate since I didn't realize that selecting a layer and picking a color would change the color for the whole layer. Some parts of the parallax needed to be redrawn as a result.
At this point, I had created my first rig using my character, Freckle. He's like a slime man! For my first rig assignment, I needed to make him walking. Of course I needed his slime feet to look nice and goopy, so those were all hand animated while the rest of him is rigged.
Combining the previous walk cycle with a parallax allows Freckle to walk from one side of the screen to the other.
Using the same rig, I made Freckle into a jump animation. The requirements were to make a character jumping while interacting with their surroundings somehow. They can be jumping over something or grabbing something. I decided to make Freckle jump up to grab an apple from a tree and fall into a basket full of apples. It's themed around Freckle's profession. He works at an apple orchard when he isn't doing super hero things, and it's his job to harvest all the fruit.
This project was to try and animate a lip sync. We needed a voice clip that was less than 10 seconds long, and had to animate a character saying it. I decided to pick an audio clip from the YouTuber, ZombieCleo's 'Last Life' minecraft series. The series revolves around a Minecraft death game where the last person alive wins. I used her Minecraft skin for the design of the character speaking. I knew I wanted to use a line from the Minecraft Life series and ended up listening to EvilAnvil's Life series songs for interesting voice lines.
This was a practice storyboard that I didn't end up using for any animations. The storyboard is about my characters, Freckle and J-Pop. Freckle is a superhero who mainly focuses on rescue missions, and J-Pop is a supervillain known for harvesting the bodies of those who cannot pay back their debts in time and selling them through a human meat market. Freckle has broken into his base to try and rescue those captive, only to run into J-Pop himself. J-Pop ends up realizing that Freckle is actually his son, who he thought died years ago. When Freckle's superpowers had developed, his orggans had started turning into slime, and his parents thought that he failed to adapt to his powers and died. Turns out he was alive, but just had poor control over his body. Freckle was so young that he doesn't remember J-Pop and he's very confused. As far as he knows, he was adopted by his family who works at an orchard, and lived with them since he was small.
This was the turn around reference that I used in order to make Freckle's rig. I have him drawn from a front, 1/4, side, 3/4ths, and back angle. These were drawn in Clip Studio Paint. Since I didn't have access to all my tools in Adobe Animaate, I had to use his base colors without any of the additional texturing.
I made a turn around for J-Pop as well even though I never ended up using the storyboard I designed for him. I only ended up making a front, 1/4th, side and back angle for him since I didn't think the 3/4ths angle would be necessary. Included are some other reference pictures of him that I made prior to the turn around. His arm is missing in one of the pictures since his powerset allows his body to reset to a certain state rapidly. His ability can be transferred to others by allowing them to consume parts of his body. J-Pop allows those who have been seriously injured or who are sickly to consume is flesh to recover. But, since it requires him losing a body part, he adds a heavy cost to it. He sees that it is only fair for him to have a cut of their body if they aren't able to pay for parts of his body that he had provided.
